Practice Yoga for Improved Focus and Health

Yoga is a low impact workout that links breath with movement for physical, emotional and spiritual benefits. While yoga is rooted in Hindu and other Eastern traditions, it has evolved over thousands of years to reflect a variety of styles and disciplines. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, which means to yoke the spirit and physical body together. At Nurture Soul Therapeutics in Houston, we modify all yoga classes for various bodies, ages and athletic abilities.

According to yogic tradition, there are six “branches” of yoga. Westerners are most familiar with hatha yoga, which is the yoga of postures (known as asanas) as well as breathing techniques to enhance physical, emotional and spiritual health. With regular practice, yoga offers many important health benefits, including lower blood pressure, better stress management, increased strength and flexibility and even weight loss, thanks to a slow and steady calorie burn.

Yoga for Pain Management
If you live with chronic pain, you know how debilitating the constant discomfort can be on your reserves of strength, energy, and feelings of well-being. Using Yoga techniques for pain management can help minimize medication usage and help you lead a happier and fuller life. The best techniques for pain management are Yoga breathing, relaxation, and meditation. These three aspects of Yoga act to distract your mind from pain, reduce your body’s tension in reaction to pain, and provide an opportunity to "move through" the pain instead of resisting it so it loses its full impact. (If physical movement does not make your pain worse, a simple routine of Yoga exercises can also be extremely helpful for learning to relax muscle tension, improving circulation, and stimulating your body’s hormonal system).

Yoga Nidra (Deep Relaxation)
Yoga Nidra refers to both a yogic practice and the high state of consciousness it produces, a wakeful state of deep introversion and inner awareness that is both relaxing and energizing. The practice is a guided systematic method of complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation induced by prolonging the suspension between wakefulness and sleep.
